I loved her in Monster, she was completely sensational in The Fate and The Furious, and she unequivocally made the entire film in Atomic Blond, but it is rare, if ever, that we see Charlise Theron not only play a comedic role, but boast such a five star whimsical performance that she had me in tears from start to finish. While, Gringo leans way more toward a crime action production I in all earnest found this to be the funniest production I have seen all year, and when I say funny, I’m not talking about this new age pro millennial Fist Fight kinda comedy, no ways! What I am talking about here is that rich, old school, Anchorman The Legend of Ron Burgundy type of funny! And I mean it when I say that, this film, while jam packed with stunts and saturated to the bone with action, is in all sincerity an exceedingly high quality comedy. Boasting of the most penetrating and prolific names in showbiz, Joel Edgerton, the very dreamy Theo Taplitz and the supremely uplifting and naturally whimsical David Oyelowo (Queen of Katwe) this is a true on-the-edge-of-your-seat action masterpiece built from the bottom up around the most supremely well scripted and original storyline that centers around the current hottest and most trending topics in North America, Medical Marijuana. That said, what I found to particularly refreshing and in fact invigorating was the fact that while this entire film is hypothesized around a very dark, and traditionally negative topic, where a drug deal has gone wron. The entire methodology and storytelling brought nothing but an extremely high level of entertainment and feel good energy. The cast itself is comprised entirely of lighthearted actors and actresses that mostly stem from ex comedic backgrounds, furthermore the angle that Nash Edgerton (The Square) and Anthony Tambakis (Warrior) took is one where there is a very unique blending between the now legal Medical Marijuana scene and the Mexican drug cartels. What I truly appreciated is the hardcore, completely no nonsense approach that Theron undertook in an absolutely astounding fashion and manner, it really has to be seen to believed. To be completely forthcoming with you, her role is almost indistinguishable from the very role that Tom Cruise starred in Tropic Thunder. Thoroughly enjoyable, fantastic storyline and an absolute must for any and all drug cartels movie lovers!
